These are the chronicles of a book addict, a photo junkie, and an aspiring author, rewriting the very fabric of reality one page (and one snapshot) at a time. From the strange to the unusual; the abandoned to the abnormal; the haunted to the historic; the supernatural to the surreal; the forests of dark fantasy, the cemeteries of gothic horror, and the post-apocalyptic ruins of science fiction are the landscapes of my imagination.

Heartwood

Heartwood - Freya Robertson The writing was solid, flowing nicely from scene to scene, and the characters were intriguing. However, the plot was just a bit too simplistic for my tastes, relying too much on deus ex machina and coincidence to make ends meet.

I mean, the flood just happened to move the right chest, revealing the secret passage beneath, which just happened to remain dry, despite the deluge. Inside is a wealth of historical artifacts, amongst which they just happen to immediately find the one book that has the answers they need. They, of course, happen to have the one person who can read it readily available, prompting a conversation that denies the very foundations of their faith, and which is met with little more than a token resistance to the earth-shattering revelation.

And that, I'm afraid, is where the story lost me. As intrigued as I was by the characters and their world, I couldn't bring myself to invest any more time in a story that rushed to such simplistic sort of 'epic' moments.
